RELATED: Things We Loved About I Am Fish (& Things We Don’t)

Because of the developer’s history of making games with difficult controls, I Am Fish is a game that can take some getting used to playing, even with an easier control scheme than previous installments. This has led many players to make a handful of mistakes while trying to guide these fish to freedom.

7 Landing On Hard Surfaces

Navigating the game is difficult on its own, but it’s especially hard when needing to watch where the fish goes. While in a glass bowl or jar, players need to pay attention to how much damage these containers take. If they take a hard enough fall, these containers can completely shatter and force the player to start over.

In order to avoid doing this, players need to keep an eye out for anything that looks like a mat. These are meant to be soft surfaces for the bowl or jar to land on so that way the fish can get down safely.

6 Not Using The Abilities

The game has a unique way of changing things up as players switch between the different fish. There are four types of fish in the game: a goldfish, a pufferfish, a piranha, and a flying fish. While the goldfish doesn’t do anything special, the other three have unique abilities that are meant to add another layer to either the platforming or puzzle solving.

This includes the pufferfish’s roll, the piranha’s bite, and the flying fish’s flight. There may be times where players are stuck and don’t know how to advance, but remembering the fish’s specific ability may help get them out of a jam.

5 Staying Out Of Water

Dying in this game is sometimes inevitable and this mostly involves the fish getting out of water for long periods of time. After a while, the screen will slowly fade to black and the game over screen will appear.

However, it is important to keep an eye on the surroundings in case there is a way to keep the fish alive temporarily. This could include a small body of water that, for example, the pufferfish can roll into. There is an entire section dedicated to the flying fish effectively jumping between water checkpoints. If players can get in the water, do so.

4 Moving Fast With Seagulls Present

Yes, this game involves some stealth sections that may or may not infuriate the player. While there are times that humans will chase the fish, the real enemy of the game are seagulls that will directly attack a fish that is in a glass container. With each hit, the bowl or jar will get closer to breaking until it does.

To prevent this, players need to take on a seagull area as slow as possible. They can tell if they are doing a good job if the seagull icon is not set to red. Accomplishing this means not having to worry about the seagulls ruining a level score.

3 Not Accounting For Momentum

Movement in I Am Fish is very similar to games like Super Monkey Ball where players have to factor in the momentum of their bowl. Going expecting smooth movement is a recipe for disaster.

Players need to keep in mind when they are guiding a fish down a hill that they don’t go full throttle forward. Going up may involve a bit of momentum. The only time that this is not a factor is when the fish is swimming in open water. When players can nail the precision of these movements, it will make going on this adventure a lot easier.

2 Going Out Of Bounds

One of the more impressive things about this game is the fact the game sometimes feels like it could be an open world. There are sometimes sections where it looks like the fish can just freely explore without needing to follow the normal path. That is not the case, however.

There is a pretty linear structure in place for each level that the player must follow. That is why it is likely for someone to go out of bounds in this level if not entirely sure what the right path is. Just because something in the level looks inviting doesn’t mean that it is.

1 Getting Lost

Tying into the previous entry, it is very easy to get lost in the game. While there are checkpoints throughout a level, the player may not be in a position where they can see where the next one is. That makes it very easy for players to miss where they are supposed to go next and causes them to wander in the same area looking for what to do.

The best way to avoid this is to pay attention to how the game spawns the fish in. They are usually pointing in the direction of where to go next, which could reduce the number of times the game becomes impossible to figure out.

I Am Fish was released on September 16, 2021, and is available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S.
