Starting this week, players now have the option to connect their computers and play together in-person. This might be an odd thing to add in a time of social distancing, where the idea of people gathering together in one location just to play games doesn’t seem all that great, but it was a feature of the original C&C games, so it makes sense on some level for it to be added to the collection.

Aside from the ability to play with friends locally (as well as through certain VPN networks), Command and Conquer Remastered’s official LAN feature allows players to implement mods in multiplayer, which “should be an evergreen way to enjoy multiplayer far into the future,” according to producer Jim Vessella. He warns, though, that there’s potential for “some quirks in the system” on account of the “variety of ways people could play over VPN and with Mods,” so he asks that players continue to provide feedback so refinements can be made if needed.

The new update also adds a large number of bug fixes, balance adjustments, and changes to community maps. In another warning, Vessella stated that these changes might make it difficult for mods to work if they’re not updated as well, so players are going to want to keep an eye on that.
